Lélio Marcos Luzes Sarcedo passed away

The sad news reached us that Lélio Marcos passed away at the age of only 61. Nobody in recent years was so active for draughts in the America’s as Lélio Marcos. He showed an enormous energy promoting draughts, especially in his home country Brazil. Through him many thousands of children learned to play Brazilian draughts on 64 squares and often changed over later to international draughts on 100 squares. A number of years ago I had the pleasure to attend one of the great events he organised not far from Sao Paulo.

Many talents are coming from his draughts schools and it is certain that we will see some of them in the international draughts arena in the years to come. Lélio was also quite outspoken and was not shy of fighting his battles. When, as he felt it, injustice was done to him he would fight back. He always did do that with his own humour that was not always understood by this counterparts.

Some eight weeks ago Lélio communicated to me that he was diagnosed with liver cancer and there were no chances of survival.

FMJD will honour Lélio by naming the upcoming World Championship International Draughts on 64 squares in 2018 in Poland the Lélio Marcos World Championship.
