Introduction to the New FMJD Rating System

The FMJD rating system has a long and respected history. For more than twenty three years, the rating work of the FMJD was carried almost entirely by Jacek Pawlicki, whose contribution to international draughts cannot be overstated.

Jacek not only developed and maintained sophisticated rating software, continuously fine tuned over many years. He also carried out the demanding and often invisible work of collecting tournament data, calculating results, uploading data to the FMJD server for publication on the website, and producing the quarterly PDF rating lists enriched with extensive statistics. This work formed the backbone of the FMJD rating system for more than two decades.

Already during his term as President of the FMJD, the decision was taken to start the development of a new rating system. The goal was to better prepare the FMJD for the future.
From the start, several key objectives were defined for the new system:

These principles open the way to important new possibilities. One of them is the possibility of transition, in the future, from fixed quarterly rating lists to ratings that can be updated more frequently and eventually in near real time.

Rating list number 127 is the first rating list produced entirely with the new system. Also the production of rating lists in PDF format and several related procedures have been automated. This makes the entire process reproducible, less error prone, and easier to audit.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Wouter Morssink for extensive testing and for performing the first full rating calculations with the new system, and once again to Jacek Pawlicki for his parallel calculation of rating list 127, which provided an important reference and validation point.

This new rating system builds on a strong legacy, while laying the foundation for a more transparent, collaborative, and future proof FMJD rating infrastructure.

Happy New Year!
